The MTV Video Music Awards, (commonly abbreviated as VMA), is an award show hosted on MTV honoring the best music videos. The first show was on September 14, 1984. Winners receive a stature of an astronaut on the moon, referred to as a "moonman." The ceremony occurs annually in August or September. They have been held in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and Las Vegas.

On August 30, 2015, Halsey attended the VMAs, although she was not nominated for an award or performing.

On August 28, 2016, Halsey and The Chainsmokers performed their hit song "Closer" on the show. They were also nominated for the Song of Summer award, although they did not win.
