when she was 17 years old. She seems conflicted on whether she wants to color the tattoo. In June 2013 she tweeted “my rose tattoo is my favorite! Had it since the beginning of my senior year of highschool! I cant bring myself to color it!” but only a few weeks later she wrote “I neeeeeed to fill in my rose tatttooooo! And get tons more! I want half a sleeve by Fall! I’m determined.” It’s been years and she still has the outline, so she must like it the way it is! However she seems to have changed her mind on this being her favorite inking. In May 2014 she tweeted “I wish I could go back in time and tell myself not to get the two roses tattooed since everybody else in the world has one now.”

  • "Ferox" on her thigh: Halsey has a tattoo on her thigh which says “FEROX” in capital letters.

“Ferox is Latin for wild, courageous, spiritable,” she explained in an instagram post. A friend did this homemade tattoo in October 2012. Her previous tattoos were done professionally and this was her first DIY “stick and poke” style inking. “It was given to me with a sewing needle, India ink, and a lot of vodka,” she tweeted.

  • '"17" on her knuc'kles: Halsey got her lucky number “17” tattooed on her

  • "511" on her elbow: Halsey got this number 511 tattoo on the back of her arm in August 2013. It is for her brother Sevian Frangipane’s birthday which is on May 11th (5/11). On May 11, 2015 she wrote “Today is so special to me I’ve had it tattooed on my body for years.

In a tweet a few months before getting the tattoo, Halsey wrote “I just love Star Wars so much it makes me emotional. Padme is crying I can’t do this. I’ve seen it 472953 times and I’m still not ready.” The tattoo is on her right elbow.

  • Om on her forearm: Halsey got this tattoo of the O

m symbol on her arm in August 2013. Om is the sound of the universe in Hinduism and other Dharmic religions.

  • "Serendipity" on her side: Halsey got a tattoo which says “Serendipity” below her left breast in July 2014. It represents the luck that she has had in both her personal and professional life. It is a matching tattoo with her mother that represents how fortunate they are to have each other.

Instagram / @iamhalsey

"I have this tattoo that says “Serendipity” and my mom and I have it matching together. My mom and I have two matching tattoos which is funny because when I was 16 I hated her. But now that I’m 21 I’m like “let’s get matching tattoos!” So things change. But it’s serendipity, and it sounds really sweet. Serendipity is a happy accident. It’s something that happens that you’re not expecting that ends up being so perfect, with so much synchronicity. And I think that’s how my mother would explain my birth. So it sounds like a really sweet story until I tell you my mom calls me a happy accident."
Over time, as her music became popular and her fanbase grew, the tattoo began to take on a new meaning. Halsey attributes much of her career success to serendipity, knowing that so many artists who are equally as talented as she is never achieve the success that she has.
"It’s very special because it’s come to mean so much more than that. There’s been a lot of serendipity in my life. A lot of things that have happened to me over the course of my career, over the course of meeting you guys, over the course of making this record, have seemed almost too perfect and too random to be true. And that’s the best part about all of it. I talk a lot in interviews about how there’s no such thing as math. I mean, math exists, but there’s no such thing as math in life and in making decisions. There’s no way to wake up and say “I’m going to follow all these steps to become the most famous musician” or “I’m going to follow all these steps to be the best mother” or “I’m going to follow all these steps to be the best girlfriend.” It doesn’t work like that. It’s a series of changes and it’s a series of failures and a series of successes. Sometimes things just happen. I can’t explain why I’m in the position that I’m in. And I also know a lot of really, really talented musicians who just can’t seem to make it work and I don’t know why, because it should. Because according to math, it should. But it’s not about math, it’s about serendipity. So it’s a very important tattoo."

  • Match on her forearm: Halsey got this match on her forearm as a matching tattoo with three of her fans in May 2015. In an interview she explained that she picked the lucky fans randomly on Twitter. She relates to her fans, most of whom are around the same age as her, and wanted to give them something more than just a hang-out session.

    Instagram / @halsey; Kazuki Hirata / /

"I got match-ing [get it] tattoos with them, and that’s the joke. I also told them that an unlit match represents not playing all your good cards like you have one. It’s unlit and I think what that represents is potential. You can strike at any moment. And I told them that when they feel like they’ve reached a point of potential in their life, or they feel like they’ve done something that they wanted to do for a long time, I told them that they should go back, get a flame added to it, and then let me know when they do, because it’s a significant moment. And I told them I would do the same, so I’m just holding out for that moment because I don’t know when I’m going to reach my potential. But hopefully one day something will be enough for me."
