Room 93 is the debut extended play by Halsey. It was released on October 27, 2014 through Astralwerks Records.[1]

This EP ushered Halsey into the spotlight, with many crediting "Ghost", her debut single and the lead single of this EP, as her breakout hit.

Background[]

The five track project was released on October 27, 2014 after Halsey was signed by Astralwerks shortly after independently releasing her breakout single "Ghost".

She goes deep behind the importance of the EP in an interview with All Things Go Music on October 29, 2014 and explains the EP's theme: For a year Halsey lived almost exclusively in hotel rooms where she formed relationships: friendships, romance-wise, and business-wise:[2]

"The EP is called Room 93 because I’ve lived my life in hotel rooms the past year. I’ve formed romantic relationships and business relationships and friendships out of hotel rooms. What’s weird about them is it’s like a stage setting, a fake place. It’s not a real environment. The EP is a narrative about how in a hotel room, because of the forced intimacy, you can either really be yourself for a bit or you can really be someone you’re not. So it’s about human relationships under the scope of that lab rat mentality, or security cam mentality. There are also a few undertones and subplots. One of them is crossing gender barriers, because I talk about drugs and sex and things male artists can sing about and they’re edgy and romantic and emotional, but as soon as a female artists talks about it, it’s like 'Shut up, that’s unladylike. We don’t want to hear that.' But I don’t care. That’s what my life is like and that’s what I’ve experienced and that’s what I want to talk about."

She also explains how the album is about not playing the victim and not letting other people treat you as a victim. The interview also includes a nod to - whether intentional or not - her sophomore album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom which explores similar themes:

"And I think the final undertone is not playing a victim. Because although a lot of my songs talk about this hopeless romantic situation or a masochistic or sadistic relationship, there is always a point of triumph in every lyric that implies that I can leave if I want to. I am not a victim. No one is taking advantage of me or hurting me or abusing me, no matter how things may come across in the songs. I’m an equal player in this game. And that’s important because a lot of female artists tend to victimize themselves too often and I would never want any young girl who is being influenced by my music to grow up with the mentality that the fault in a relationship is entirely on one person. It’s a partnership. It’s a duel. A hotel room isolates that and so that’s kind of where that narrative comes from."

However, unlike Hopeless Fountain Kingdom this project is not an all conceptual EP:

"It’s been a weird journey. Every song I write is autobiographical and is about people, and that’s one of the things that gets complicated. You have to decide where’s your place as a songwriter. I hate limiting myself, and I hate censoring myself, but every now and then, I’ll write a line and be like, ‘Oh no, I can’t do that.’"

The project was re-released digitally on March 9, 2015, including a new version of "Ghost", this version later is also included on the singer's debut full-length album Badlands. As is EP-mate "Hurricane".[1]

On November 10, 2014, a Spotify exclusive commentary of the EP was released. It contains Halsey explaining the meaning behind each song in detail. To view the commentary go to the song's individual pages.

On March 3, 2015, a "1 Mic - 1 Take" version of the Room 93 EP was released. The release features Halsey singing songs from the EP in a recording studio with just one mic. Everything was recorded in one take (hence the name).
